Will 2021 be the year for electric cars? So far this year, we’ve seen an increase of companies pledging to only offer pure electric cars by 2030, a larger variety of EVs join the market as well as financial incentives offered to drivers. We can say that there has been a progressive growth in the amount of electric cars now on the road. As they say the only way is up!

Let’s take a look at the UK’s most popular electric cars. Plus the runners up for anyone looking to make the switch and buy an electric vehicle. Find out why you should be getting in touch with the team at EV Sales…

THE MOST POPULAR ELECTRIC CAR GOES TO…

For anyone that knows even the slightest thing about the EV market will know that charging into top position is Tesla. According to recent GoCompare research, Tesla accounts for a huge 33% of electric cars on the road. 22% of which drive the affordable Tesla Model 3.

Following slightly behind and grabbing 2nd place is the classic Nissan Leaf. With 19% of drivers choosing to buy a Nissan, this is an EV that you will have seen on roads near you. It’s an incredibly popular choice!

In 3rd place we have another entry for Tesla. The stylish and sleek Tesla Model X comes in at 10.9%. The large SUV with falcon style doors normally has a massive impact on drivers, however not this time. This could potentially be due to the hefty price tag that comes with a superior vehicle such as this.

4th place is awarded to one of the other original entries to the market, the BMW i3. 8.7% of EV drivers opted for the classic BMW i3. The BMW i3 is one of the most affordable electric cars currently on the market alongside the Renault ZOE. We are surprised that this only claimed 4th!

Lastly, in 5th place is yet another entry for Tesla. This time, the classy Tesla Model S makes an appearance. With a variety of models available, and being made by one of the main manufacturers of electric cars, the Tesla Model S is bound to be a crowd pleaser.

DOES AGE GROUPS HAVE AN AFFECT ON ELECTRIC CARS?

In short, yes. The type of electric car purchased will primarily depend on the age of the driver. So why’s this?

Gen Z (17 – 24 year olds) and Millennials (25 – 34 year olds) are expected to earn less than perhaps Gen X as an example. This will mean that they have less disposable income to spend on an electric car. The Renault ZOE and BMW i3 appear to both make the list for Gen Z for this exact reason.

HAVE YOU NOTICED MORE ELECTRIC CARS ON YOUR LOCAL ROADS?

If you live in a built up, urban town or city then you would think that driving an electric vehicle would be very common. Especially considering the amount of chargers available and beneficial points of buying an electric vehicle. However, it can go both ways. If you live in London for example, the roads are incredibly congested and commuters opt for public transport instead of electric transport unfortunately.

On the other hand, drivers have reported seeing a rise in the amount of electric cars being driven by their fellow drivers. The Tesla Model 3, Nissan Leaf and Jaguar I-Pace are three of the most popular choices for EV drivers.
