The UK fuel crisis leaves the public keen to buy an EV!

The current fuel crisis in the UK has led many people to consider whether it would be better to buy an EV. While the shortage is with HGV drivers, rather than fuel itself, the mass panic buying across the country has left lots of fuel stations running low or running out of petrol and diesel.

While Transport Secretary, Grant Shapps, warned drivers to “continue as normal” we can see why the public are panicked. As expected, we’re now facing huge queues and delays across the country as people urgently attempt to fill up their vehicles.

“Where can I buy an EV?”

Since Friday, when the shortage began, millions of UK residents have been seeking alternative options to their conventional petrol or diesel vehicles. An analysis of Google search data reveals that online searches for electric cars have increased by 1,600%.

In addition, search terms such as “electric cars uk 2021” or “best electric cars 2021” jumped by at least 1,350%. Meanwhile, the Government is sticking to their original zero-emissions plan, meaning new petrol and diesel will be banned from 2030.

While the fuel crisis may have increased the visibility and importance of EVs, we were already seeing electric vehicle ownership increasing month on month. In the last 12 months, EV ownership has more than doubled in four regions of the UK.

Ownership in the South West is up by 142%, up 132% in Yorkshire and Humber and up 128% in the South East. The biggest surge has been in the North West (not Kim and Kayne’s kid), where EV ownership has reached over 22,000, up from 7,005 in 2020 – an increase of 214%.

At the moment, EVs still make up a small percentage of the total number of car sales. However, the upcoming years will be critical in ensuring that the switch to greener motoring stays on track.

Fitted with adjustable back seats, the Kangoo is super versatile. You can choose to keep the van fitted with the additional 3 seats in the back, or you can pull them forward which creates more room for carrying materials.

Due to its size, the Kangoo charges really quickly for any electric vehicle. When using a 7kW charger it will take 5 hour to fully charge from zero. This is much quicker than the Vauxhall Vivaro-e alternative which takes 8.6 hours using the same charger.
