The energy company is offering financial support to local authorities to help fund EV charging infrastructure to support the planned phasing out of petrol and diesel vehicles. Read on to learn more!
EV NEWS: Shell to install over 50,000 EV charge points!
Shell recently announced their plans to install 50,000 electric vehicle charging stations by 2025. Their drive is to make electric vehicles more accessible to drivers without off-street parking. This is a result of the government’s pledge to ban the sale of all new petrol and diesel vehicles by 2030.
As their aim is to reach net zero by 2050, the UK will need sufficient infrastructure, including many more public charging stations, to support this change. Shell’s EV charging points will be rolled out by their sister-company Ubitricity, who already have over 3,600 charging stations in Britain.
The plans involve Shell financially subsidising local authorities by topping up the remaining
25% of the price that is not covered by the government. A recent report from the Competition and Markets Authority suggests that between 280,000 and 480,000 public chargers will need to be installed by 2030 to keep up with demand. That’s more than 10 times the current amount of chargers.
Shell’s UK chair, David Bunch, said, “it’s vital to speed up the pace of EV charger installation across the UK and this aim and financing offer is designed to help achieve that.” And he couldn’t be more right!
Especially due to recent figures from the National Audit Office which shows that over 60% of people living in cities and urban areas do not have private, off-street parking. While it isn’t impossible to live with an EV without a driveaway, it certainly can make it difficult.
Hopefully this surge in public charging points will make EV life that little bit easier for those households! It will also have a huge impact for people making regular long journeys or anyone leasing an EV without charging points installed at their home. We think it’s definitely a step in the right direction!
