The 2014 Tesla Model S – How Good Are They Now?

If you want to buy a Tesla Model S in 2022 you will need to prepare yourself for a very long wait. At least if you are buying brand new that is.

The new car economy worldwide has been suffering from many supply issues. A combination of the problems caused by the global pandemic, a shortage of the necessary superconductor chips and the war in the Ukraine have all had a major impact on electric vehicle delivery. In some cases the manufacturers won’t even give an estimated delivery date at the time of ordering. It is just so far into the future.

With this in mind, many people are looking to buy a second-hand Tesla. Here at EV Sales we have two Tesla Model S cars from 2014 up for grabs. So just how good are these cars? Have they stood the test of time in an ever-changing market?

Tesla Model S – The Trend Setter

All vehicles that we sell second-hand have only ever had one previous owner. That is our sister company, EVision Electric Vehicles.

Ford’s technology is designed to ensure EV users can stay in their vehicle while the robot does all the hard work. The prototype Ford has developed can be controlled via an individual’s smartphone. Following lots of testing, the robot Set up in 2014, EVision went where no one had ever gone before in the UK. They became a car hire company with a difference. That difference being that they only hired out electric cars. Tesla cars to be more specific (there weren’t any other serious makes available back then). EVision started the trend for electric car rental, with the Tesla Model S being the trend setter.

Interest in this new electric supercar was phenomenal and the number of Tesla Model S cars on the fleet grew quickly.

The 2014 Tesla Model S – A Modern Classic

I will admit that it is strange talking about a car from 2014 being a classic. However, with the world of electric vehicles moving so quickly, the earlier cars have picked up that classics tag.

Something that is instantly recognisable is the rounded nose of the Tesla Model S from the early days. Although later replaced by the sharper, more pointed nose, the original shape had many fans. There are plenty of purists who miss the bubble front of the Tesla Model S. It is a beautiful and endearing part of the car’s character.

Other than this, the Tesla Model S has remained largely unchanged. Or at least the changes are very much more subtle. The handles still retract and have remained the same shape, the boot and froot (or trunk and frunk for our American audience) still has the TARDIS-like amount of cavernous space on the inside, and the interior is just as comfortable and impressive as the modern inceptions.

Performance on a 2014 Tesla Model S

Performance-wise, the Tesla Model S from 2014 still beats nearly all electric cars being released today. Even though we are talking about a car from 8 years ago (at the time of writing) this vehicle is seriously impressive by today’s standards.

According to the EV Database, when it was released, the Tesla Model S 85 had a real world range of around 245 miles. The 85kWh battery combined with the rear wheel motor gave a limited top speed of 140mph and could get you from 0-62mph in just 5.6 seconds.

Even 8 years later, and with under 100,000 miles of use, these figures still hold water. Yes, there will be a slight drop in the real world range. However, this will only result in a loss of around 5%, meaning a revised real world range of around 233 miles. A majority of modern electric vehicles will have a real world range sitting comfortably below that figure.

The Tesla Model S P85, the other model of Tesla Model S we currently have available for sale, has similar statistics. The real world range will sit at around the same or slightly below that of the Tesla Model S 85. The acceleration, however, is noticeably quicker. You can achieve 0-60 in just 4.2 seconds. Incredible, even by today’s standards.

Other Benefits of the 2014 Tesla Model S

The 2014 Tesla Model S still receives over-the-air updates and comes with the most up-to-date software available. Another great bonus of the earlier Tesla models is that they come with free lifetime supercharging on the Tesla supercharger network. In a world where energy prices seem to be forever going upwards, free charging is a blessing that cannot be overstated.

So, a classic supercar with a modern car beating performance. What’s not to like about the Tesla Model S 85 or Tesla Model S P85?
