How will electric vehicles change our future?

Everyone’s talking about electric vehicles! Whether you’re keen to help the environment or just want to experience driving an electric vehicle.

With world leaders dedicated to challenging climate change, it appears that fuel-guzzling vehicles on the road are soon to be extinct. But how will electric vehicles change our future?

HOW WILL ELECTRIC VEHICLES CHANGE OUR ENVIRONMENT?

Air pollution

Did you know air pollution is the biggest environmental threat to health in the UK? In 2019, the government reported that between 28,000 and 36,000 deaths a year were due to long-term exposure to poor air pollution.

The development of electric vehicles could be the saving grace that our planet and our health needs! Electric vehicles do not produce any direct emissions. This on its own should drastically improve the air quality around busy routes such as schools, shopping centres and hospitals.

While EVs do not directly produce any emissions, it’s important that we look at the indirect emissions that could come from electric vehicles. This all depends on how the vehicle was made and how the electricity within the vehicle is generated.

Some EV manufacturers are keen to curb emissions by ensuring their factories are more eco-friendly and sustainable. The Volkswagen ID.4 is the perfect example of this! The ID.4 is certified as carbon-neutral upon leaving the factory.

Noise pollution

Once the majority of the vehicles on the road are electric, we’re bound to notice a huge difference in the noise level! Electric vehicles are known for their silent driving styles when compared to their fuel-run counterparts.

Noise pollution can impact the well-being of wildlife as well as our health. Animals use sound for a variety of reasons, including to find food, to navigate and to avoid predators. High noise pollution can make it very difficult for them to accomplish these tasks which could make it difficult for them to survive.

Replacing the current roar of a main road with the light hum of electric vehicles will make a huge difference to our daily lives. However, it will mean we will have to quickly adapt. Quiet cars means other road users and pedestrians won’t be able to simply listen out for oncoming traffic.

Back in 2019, the UK government enforced new legislation to protect vulnerable road users. Now all manufacturers must install a system in all new hybrid and electric vehicles.

WILL ELECTRIC CARS AFFECT THE COST OF ELECTRICITY?

From a personal finance perspective, that largely depends on how you choose to charge your EV. If you choose to charge your electric vehicle at home, you’ll be able to take advantage of cheaper off-peak tariffs.

However, if you’re relying on using public chargers then you may have to pay out slightly more. The bigger impact of electric vehicles on electricity prices remains to be predicted.

Recently, some concerns have been raised about whether the UK’s power grid is ready for an increase in electric vehicles. However, we are sure that with technology evolving all the time, these worries are likely to be premature.

HOW WILL ELECTRIC CARS IMPACT MY COMMUTE?

In short, probably not a lot. Having more electric vehicles on the road doesn’t necessarily mean there will be more or less traffic. The amount of vehicles on the road at one time is likely to stay the same.

WILL ELECTRIC VEHICLES MEAN FEWER JOBS?

On one hand, electric vehicles have fewer moving parts which means they are less likely to need maintenance. However, if we continue to develop the EV industry, it’s likely that more jobs to support this will be created across the UK.

WHAT EVS DO WE HAVE FOR SALE?

It’s clear that the switch from fuel-powered vehicles to electric ones is coming! The UK government has committed to curbing climate change by ensuring all vehicles are carbon-neutral by 2050.
