But would you know how to successfully charge an electric car if you had to? It’s something that is completely alien to those that haven’t adapted to this huge, upcoming change. In this week’s blog post we cover how you can get charge ready for your electric car, as well as the latest electric vehicles for sale.
CHARGING AN ELECTRIC CAR AT HOME – DO I NEED ONE?
For those that want the constant reassurance of being close by to a charger, we would recommend getting a charge point installed at home. We understand that not everyone has the ability to install one due to being in a flat, or being in shared or rented accommodation, but it does assist in charging a car before a journey. EV owners will be able to charge an electric car in a matter of hours, or even leave it charging overnight using a three pin plug, also known as a granny cable.
Home charging is made to be cheap, easily accessible and efficient for home owners, but it isn’t always necessary. If you’re lucky enough to work for a company that has car charging points installed or live near a fast charging station then this will also suffice.
HOW DO I GET A CHARGE POINT INSTALLED AT HOME?
A three pin charger can be used to charge an electric car at home as we mentioned above, but it should be noted that it should not be relied on as a main source of charging. It’s great for adding on a few extra needed miles, but it would be more beneficial to get a dedicated home charging point installed instead.
According to PodPoint, a fully installed home charging point costs anything from £799, depending on the specifications you need.
HOW MUCH WILL IT COST TO CHARGE AN ELECTRIC CAR?
Once the charge point has been fitted, you will then only pay for the electricity you use to charge your EV. Currently, the typical electric rate in the UK is just over 28p per kWh. Charging overnight on the Economy 7 tariff is roughly 11p per kWh. Plus, there are various tariffs that are designed exclusively for electric vehicle owners!
WHERE SHOULD A CAR CHARGER BE INSTALLED?
Now you’ve decided to get a car charge point installed, the big question is, where will it go? This is something you will need to have planned prior to a qualified electrician turning up to complete the installation.
EV drivers will need to take into consideration where they would normally park, whether that’s a driveway or garage. Additionally, make sure you think about where the charging port of the car is located. There’s no point stretching a cable from a charge point installed on the right wall when the charging port is on the left of the car. Don’t make it harder than it needs to be!
Always consider the safety of plugging in a vehicle and trailing cables unnecessarily across the floor. If the charge point is located close to the charge port, then the trail will run nicely along the floor instead of stretching across in the air.
