Ever heard people questioning how eco-friendly electric vehicles actually are? Yep, us too! Well, it appears electric vehicles are having a positive impact on the environment already.
In fact, data from the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT) shows that carbon dioxide emissions produced by new cars in the UK dropped to the lowest level ever. This is all thanks to the unprecedented surge in electric vehicle sales throughout 2021.
Despite pure electric vehicles only accounting for 12% of the total market last year, they have rapidly influenced the emissions for 2021 as they produce zero tailpipe emissions. In total, emissions fell by 11.2%.
Of course, this would also have been helped by the sale of hybrid electric vehicles as they produce far fewer emissions than pure petrol or diesel vehicles.
Electric vehicle sales
Figures, also produced by the SMMT, released in February 2022 show that electric vehicle sales are not dropping any time soon. Electric vehicle sales for January 2022 show that over 14,000 battery electric vehicles (BEV) were sold in the UK, accounting for 12.5% of new cars sold.
This has risen by 27.5% compared to BEV sales in January 2021, however we do have to take into account that the UK was in a lockdown at that point. It is thought that the electric vehicle sales is likely to soar even further throughout 2022, especially with a bunch of new models coming out!
Mike Hawes, Chief Executive of the SMMT, says, “This year is off to a reasonable start, however, and with around 50 new electrified models due for release this year, customers will have an ever greater choice, which can only be good for our shared environmental ambitions.”
We can’t wait to see how the EV market performs this year!
The biggest change with driving electric vehicles
If you’re keen to cut your carbon footprint this year, then an electric vehicle may be for you! Driving a cleaner vehicle is one of the easiest ways to help the environment as there is very little change or impact to your life.
While the thought of switching to an electric vehicle can seem daunting and confusing at first, it’s actually much easier than people expect. In fact, driving an electric vehicle is extremely similar to driving a conventional, petrol or diesel automatic vehicle.
One of the only major differences is how you ‘fill up’ your vehicle. Charging an electric vehicle may seem slightly different than driving to a fuel station to fill up, but it can actually be easier. Think back to your first venture to a fuel station, that was probably a little bit daunting too.
With the help of home chargers, you don’t even have to leave your driveway to charge your electric vehicle. You just open the cap and plug it in. It is as simple as that! Plus, thanks to the UK’s ever growing network of public charging stations, charging on the go has never been easier.
You’ll now find electric vehicle chargers at supermarkets, gyms, restaurants, motorway services and many more places. Most of these public chargers will be capable of rapid charging, meaning your vehicle will charge much quicker than at home. This makes longer journeys in an electric vehicle much easier.
You may even be lucky enough to have electric vehicle charging stations at your workplace. In which case, you’ll probably be able to plug in when you arrive and drive away fully charged at the end of your working day.
